From Pink To Red

Posted 6/17/2008

Paul A. Ibbetson

As momentum continues to build in the aftermath of my radio interview with Jodie Evans of the anti-war group Code Pink, I thought I would take a few moments to reflect publicly on my own personal observations of what took place in this unique conversation. I call it a unique conversation because I believe for a brief moment the public was privy to an uncensored view of the communistic philosophy from the leadership of Code Pink.

It would only be fair to tell you how this interview transpired. I originally contacted Code Pink's Medea Benjamin regarding an interview on my radio show, "Conscience of Kansas." Benjamin said she would be out of the country, but gave me the contact information of Jodie Evans. After lengthy deliberations with her assistant, we hedged out the content questions for the interview, and the date and time of the show was set. Pretty simple stuff, right? The interview was in a simple conversational style. I invite everyone to listen to the interview in full from my archives where it can be listened to commercial-free or downloaded. Video portions are available at YouTube.com. I welcome everyone to take a long, hard look at what was said – however, I doubt that Evans would extend the same invitation.

I've interviewed hundreds of people in my life, either as a police investigator or behind the microphone, and a lot about an individual can be discovered by how he or she acts during simple conversations. When interviewing criminals, it is often the contradictions in the statements they make that eventually leads to their undoing and the truth of the criminal matter being exposed. This is applicable to the Evans interview in that she was a treasure trove of contradictions.

Evans said she supports the military but wants it to limit recruitment capabilities. She said she is the most patriotic military supporter she knows (she should get out more). Evans says that Code Pink does not support communism, but their organization is full of communist supporters, and the leader she holds in highest esteem is the communist dictator Hugo Chavez. These contradictions, in my opinion, reflect the personal conflict Evans struggled with when we spoke. The conflicts were evident in what she "wanted" to say and what she felt she "should" say in a public forum. Fortunately, for truth's sake, her lack of self-control, which led to her use of profanity on the air and her chronic interruptions of my questions, also led to moments where she spoke from her heart. This was where the pink turned to red and where we glimpsed the truly ugly communistic American-hating side of Code Pink's leadership.

In the middle of a spirited exchange, Evans validated the 9/11 attacks committed by Osama bin Laden. When I challenged her on this point I could feel Evan's personal conflict with the truth. She eventually opted to back pedal from the clear concise statement she had just made. This conflict with the truth was present again when I questioned Evans about Code Pink's affiliation with communism. She was extremely reluctant to answer these questions and made a valiant attempt to convince me that being a communist and being a good American could be tied together. Sorry, Jodie, I did not buy that argument then and I do not buy it now.

Criticisms of how I handled Jodie Evans continue, as this interview has rapidly become a part of the public consciousness. Some critics feel I was too easy on Evans and allowed her to bully her way during the interview. Others believe that had I engaged in the verbal brawl she apparently wanted, I would have simply sunk to her level and demeaned myself. I think there is some truth to both statements; however, I ultimately fell back on my law enforcement training and simply attempted to create an environment where Evans could tell her truth to the American people. I think to a greater degree this happened, and the results should be looked at long and hard by Americans who love the military and this country.

In my humble opinion, based upon my conversation with Jodie Evans, she is most definitely a communist sympathizer and carries strong anti-American sentiment. She embodies the dangerous combination of the naiveté communist dictators troll for when looking for dupes to spread their propaganda with the zealousness of the extremists we see around the world. In short, Evans may very well be a fool, but she's a fool who truly believes in what she is doing, and this is the most chilling thing of all. Evans' statements in her interview on the "Conscience of Kansas" radio program are radical, and they enrage those who love this country.

On a larger scope, her statements should validate the conservatives who have come before me and reported the communistic nature of Jodie Evans and the anti-American stance brought forward by the leadership of Code Pink. The only difference now is that the transition from pink to red – that is, communist red – can now be taken directly from the lips of Jodie Evans.
